Lagu ini bercerita bagaimana perasaan seorang anak kepada orangtuanya (ayahnya)–"Hey dad look at me". Anak ini sangat ingin menjadi anak yang dapat membanggakan ayahnya–"Did I grow up according to plan?". Dan ingin mengikuti semua rencana ayahnya dalam hidup anak ini. Ia berusaha sangat keras untuk bisa menjadi nomor satu–"And now I try hard to make it. I just want to make you proud".

Lagu ini menceritakan tentang semangat dan kekuatan yang ingin dibangun oleh seorang sahabat kepada sahabatnya yang sedang mengalami kesusahan dan kesulitan yang harus dihadapi dalam hidupnya. Hal ini nampak dari cuplikan teks berikut ini:

Pada umumnya, lirik lagu biasanya akan ada beberapa bait yang akan diulang-ulang (atau disebut juga reffrain ), dengan maksud ada suatu penekanan di bait lagu yang diulang itu, tetapi, lagu ini berbeda. Lagu ini tidak mengharapkan pendengarnya untuk mementingkan hanya pada beberapa baitnya saja dan memang tidak ada unsur pengulangan lirik tertentu. Si penggubah lagu ingin mencoba mengajak pendengar lagu untuk mendengar pesan lagu ini sampai habis. Di mulai dari tentang “cinta”, lalu tentang perasaan “putus asa” ,”egois” & “kekalahan”, dan berakhir dengan isi pesan tentang “harapan”& “kemenangan”, penggubah lagu mencoba mengingatkan pendengar untuk selalu percaya ada harapan dibalik masa yang sukar.

Aktor di dalam lagu ini, menurut saya adalah seseorang yang menghadapi perasaan sedih dan marah terhadap suatu hal (di dalam lagu ini digambarkan mungkin akibat berakhirnya hubungan aktor dengan pacar). Perasaan yang dialami sedemikian hebatnya sehingga ia mempersepsikan semua hal menjadi berwarna hitam. Ia bahkan menolak warna-warna lain yang lebih bersifat cerah (merah di pintu, warna baju gadis di musim panas, No colors anymore I want them to turn black) dan kalau ia bisa, ia ingin meniadakan warna-warna cerah tersebut untuk kemudian menggantinya dengan warna hitam pekat.
